- All you need to know about metal dies/toolings for foil stamping
- Hot stamping is the application of an image or text on the cover of a book, an album or a box, through a metal tool using pressure and heat. What characterizes this technique is the application of pressure and heat resulting in the local deformation of the material and at the same time the transfer of certain parts of the used sheet. This creates a bas-relief effect on the substrate.
- The most important factors for hot stamping are, type of foil material/color, type of substrate, stamping pressure, tooling and its temperature, and seconds per print. When the stamp is engraved with different depths, the result is a raised impression. It is important to use boards with a smooth surface and good resistance. An adequate application of the foil material depends on its release from the support and the sharpness of the impression of a good adhesion between the foil material and the substrate where it is going to be stamped.
- At the same time, the type of dies/tools is also very important. There are several types such as magnesium, copper or brass. The rule of thumb is that the harder the metal, the longer the sharp edges will remain and the sharper the image.
- - Magnesium dies are recommended for smaller runs as they are the most economical option. However, magnesium bezels tend to lose their sharpness.
- - Copper dies are a better option as they are more robust. The result is a print with finer lines, and details, and for longer.
- - Brass dies are the best option for a durable solution and added sturdiness. Despite being more expensive, their edges remain sharp and will deliver sharp, clear for longer time. This metal can also be used to emboss or deboss at the same time as foil stamping.
- Using different types of foils, multiple graphic finishes can be achieved. We can stamp a variety of metallic and pigment foils with matte or glossy looks. Gold or silver are the most common colors; however, we can choose between matte, satin or high gloss finishes for a large number of available colors and effects.
- Hot stamping is known as an environmentally friendly printing process. To begin with, we can mention the lack of solvents and dust particles, which is already an advantage. Remnants of used foils can be disposed of with the usual waste stream. The sheets that are glued to paper will not form any impediment to the conventional paper recycling process.
