What is paper engineering?

What is paper engineering? When we talk about new technologies applied to video games or cinema, about the complexity of designing interfaces to generate 3D environments or develop immersive spaces and augmented realities, we think of simulators, emulators, 3Dcinema, 4DX, 3D photo, etc. The truth is that complexity can be found in the simplest things. This is demonstrated by the combination of artistic techniques such as origami and paper layout. Because augmented reality is nothing new, of course new technologies have led us to experiment and create unimaginable things, and in the case of 3D the idea has been evolving since 1306, with paper engineering. The activity of the paper engineer supposes bringing an idea to reality, through designs, techniques, models that, together with the knowledge of other sciences, manage to solve problems and satisfy the needs of the client, with the application ofinventiveness and ingenuity. Paper engineering is the science behind developing paper products ranging from food wrappers to cardboard boxes. Paper engineering dates back to 1306 when an astrologer included volvelles (rotating discs), for the first time in a book. As surprising as it may be, before the books with these mechanisms were for adults and it was not until the eighteenthcentury that they became popular for children. Mobile books are usually called “Pop-Up”, although in fact Pop-Up is a trademark registered in the United States by the company Blue Ribbon Books Inc, of New York in the time between the two world wars. Paper engineering involves any three-dimensional, movable or unfolding structure, transformations, tunnel (effect) books, volvelles, flaps, pull-tabs, pop-outs , pull-down mechanisms and more, each of which works in a different way, and are applied in different things, for example, packaging, books, cards, invitations and mock-ups. Recently it has become more popular thanks to the application of technology such as laser cutting, we can enjoy much more complex engineering works on paper, be it Cut out Paper (cut paper, we have said that it is the evolution of our chopped paper) or Paper Sculptures (three-dimensional paper sculptures), without a doubt it is something that never ceases to amaze us.
Engineers may want to develop more efficient or environmentally friendly methods of paper manufacture, for example, using techniques like renewable sources of fiber and the addition of recycled materials. They can also work on topics like more durable paper, papers that take dyes more completely, and other issues. They must consider how a product will be used and may need to think about other concerns, like the environmental impact of pulp production. They also work on finished paper products, including custom products for customers like pharmaceutical companies and publishing houses. August 24 2022|Emilia Piedra Donoso.
