3 tips to design a package that increases your sales

Product packaging and design still matter! Packaging is the first contact and experience your consumer has with your product therefore it is important to create an impression that customers are unlikely to forget. Packaging design has to help sell and attract consumers. It is essential to find out about current trends when it comes to designing good packaging. How is it possible to get more sales using packaging as a tool? In this article we bring three tips to achieve it. 1. Be creative and design for the future The biggest challenge when designing a package to sell more is the fine line between innovation and identifiability. It is important to make sure you make standard packaging that works well and is easily modifiable for promotions or seasons (Christmas, Summer, etc.). This will save money on design and manufacturing. In addition, it is important that all the packaging follows the same design line so that it is identifiable with the brand. 2. Tell a story about the product There are many brands that think of creative and fun designs to give consumers a clue of what they will find inside the packaging. Through shapes, design or materials, packaging has to tell something about the product that will be inside. An example of this is the Beyond Meat brand with packaging that highlights its origin and green vocation, Beyond Meat managed to grow its net income by 36.6% in 2020, compared to the previous year, according to its latest financial report. In addition, its good results have been reflected in the performance of its shares, which are trading 98% above their starting price on the New York Stock Exchange on May 3, 2019, according to the tradingview data analysis platform. In its debut, the price was around 50.00 dollars per share and at the close of the day on April 26 it reached 126.00 dollars. Although their packaging is not biodegradable, on their website they explain that home deliveries in the United States arrive in recyclable boxes and insulators in several states. “The attractive label device, boldly stamped typeface and magnetic food photography are the key to our product. It's time to change the way the world eats,” explains Will Schafer, Director of Marketing for Beyond Meat. 3. Generate a surprise element To get the consumer's attention you have to think “outside the box”. Choosing a surprise element for packaging, something that is not usual, can be the fundamental piece. The human being is curious by nature and when he/she sees something that stands out from the rest, he/she feels attracted. A container has to be different from the competition in order to sell more. The shape of a package has a great influence on the value perceived by the consumer. An original way of packaging or the use of unconventional materials will send a message to your customers. A good example is the origami tea bags from Green Berry Tea. This creative packaging features a box with a minimalist design and origami birds. However, the most attractive thing is the shape of the tea bags. As the tea infuses, the bag takes shape and the bird unfolds. Most people expect to see a square tea bag with tea inside, but never in an origami shape. The result is that it turns making tea into something really beautiful that draws a lot of attention.
