Corrugated cardboard
Corrugated cardboard
Corrugated cardboard is one of the most used materials for packaging due to its strength, durability, sustainability, and value for money. And maybe you didn't know it, but there are many types of corrugated cardboard.
It is characterized by combining two elements in its structure:
One (or several) sheets of corrugated paper, also known as flute or medium, which acts as a central nerve and gives the corrugated cardboard extra strength. If we use the simile of a sandwich, this component would be the ham or sausage that we place inside.
Smooth cardboard sheets (or liners), which are placed outside or which function as separators for different layers of flutes. Continuing with the example of the sandwich, the liners would be the bread.
There are several possible combinations of flutes and liners, resulting in various variants of corrugated board, with varying degrees of flexibility and strength.
Single faceboard: formed by a smooth face and a corrugated sheet. It is a light cardboard ideal as cushioning, protection, or reinforcement cardboard.
Single wall board or double-sided cardboard: made up of two smooth sides and a corrugated sheet. It is the most used combination of corrugated cardboard.
Double wall board or double-double cardboard: made up of 3 smooth sides and 2 corrugated sides. Its resistance level is quite high, and it is used in the packaging of fragile or heavy products.
Triple board: formed by 4 smooth faces and 3 corrugated faces. It is the cardboard that offers greater resistance, it is almost as resistant as wood.
In addition to the combination of smooth and corrugated face, the thickness of the cardboard is also determined by the height of the corrugation or channel of the corrugated sheet. This is a factor that, together with the quality of the paper of the smooth sheets – which we will see below – greatly influenced the resistance and damping capacity of the cardboard: the higher the wave height, the better the damping. According to this criterion we have a second classification, in which these models stand out:
E-Flute: wave with an approximate height of 1/16”B-Flute: wave with an approximate height of 1/8 “C-Flute: wave with an approximate height of 11/64”A-Flute: wave with a height of approximately 1/4 “F-Flute: wave with an approximate height 1/32”
What is corrugated cardboard used for in the field of packaging?
1. Corrugated cardboard adopts different presentations depending on the manufacturing packaging product whose manufacture is used; and, consequently, it is destined for different uses.
2. Corrugated cardboard rolls: for sale in different weights and sizes. Widely used to protect fragile surfaces from impacts and to wrap heavy and bulky products because it adapts to their shapes. If your company uses this product frequently, we recommend purchasing a roll holder that makes it easier to cut sections to the desired size.
3. Corrugated cardboard boxes: a wide variety of boxes designed for the storage and transport of all types of merchandise.
Corrugated cardboard uses: Due to its resistance and flexibility, corrugated cardboard has multiple uses: Corrugated cardboard in rolls is used to wrap objects of different shapes, providing them with optimum protection against bumps, scratches, and all kinds of aggressions that they are likely to suffer during their transfer. It is also very useful for covering furniture, floors, walls, and other surfaces when interior renovations are being carried out. Corrugated cardboard will prevent damage from construction work, paving, painting, etc. With the corrugated cardboard sheets, spaces inside the packages can be compartmentalized. In this way, shocks derived from handling are prevented, as well as accidental perforations of the content. August 24 2022|Emilia Piedra Donoso.
