The legislative reference for food packaging is the FDA (U.S Food and Drug Admistration) and are regulated in the Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R.) under Title 21 on food and drugs, Part 176-186 (21 C.F.R. Parts 174-186) on materials and objects intended to come into contact with food. This regulation sets the requirements in terms of food safety and traceability for manufacturers of foodpackaging, so that the health of consumers is guaranteed.
These products, which are widely distributed in the market, include: adhesives, ceramics, cork, rubber, glass, ion exchange resins, metals and alloys, paper and cardboard, plastics, printing inks, regenerated cellulose, silicones, textile products, varnishes and coatings, waxes, wood and active and intelligent materials and objects.
They must be inert enough so that their components do not have a negative effect on the health of consumers or influence the quality of food.
