Automatic Tape Application for Packaging

How automatic double-sided tape application works for mailers, displays and packaging, plus what to specify for tape position, adhesive and liner.

Double-sided tape turns a printed piece into something that closes, mounts or seals without a separate adhesive step at pack-out. Applied automatically, it goes down consistently in position and length, which is hard to match by hand on any meaningful quantity.

Common applications

  • Peel-and-seal closures on mailers, envelopes and shipping cartons.
  • POP and display components that mount to shelves, headers or other panels.
  • Pocket folders and presentation pieces that close with a strip of tape.
  • Pre-taped components that retail staff or end users assemble on site.

How it works

Flat sheets or die-cut blanks feed through a tape applicator that lays down strips of double-sided tape with a release liner, cut to length and placed in register. Multiple tape heads allow several strips in one pass, so a piece that needs tape in more than one location does not have to run twice. C&H runs automatic two-sided tape application on a Lamina 1400 with five high-speed tape heads, handling tape widths from 1/2" to 1" and sheets up to 28" x 40". Sequence matters when tape is one of several operations. Tape is usually applied after printing and die cutting, and on folded pieces it has to be placed so it clears the folder-gluer and ends up in the right orientation once the piece is formed.

Design and spec considerations

  • Mark tape positions, lengths and widths on a separate layer of the dieline or mechanical.
  • Specify how the tape will be used, not just where it goes. A permanent mount, a one-time seal and a repositionable closure each call for a different adhesive.
  • Match the adhesive to the surface. Coated, laminated and uncoated stocks bond differently, and the tape supplier's data sheet is worth checking.
  • Decide on liner orientation and whether the end user needs an extended liner or pull tab to peel it easily.
  • Allow clearance from edges, folds and scores so tape does not interfere with converting or closing.
  • Plan for storage and shipping. Heat and humidity affect adhesive performance over time.

Send C&H the dieline, tape positions and intended use, and we will review the layout and adhesive choice with you before the job is scheduled.
