RTE vs STE Cartons
Reverse tuck end and straight tuck end cartons look alike but differ in board yield, presentation and artwork orientation. Here is how to choose between them.
RTE and STE describe how the two ends of a tuck-end carton close. RTE stands for reverse tuck end, STE for straight tuck end. They look nearly identical on a shelf, but the difference affects board yield, artwork setup and how the carton presents when it is opened.
How the two styles differ
On an RTE carton, the top closure hinges from one panel and the bottom closure hinges from the opposite panel, so the tucks close in opposite directions. This layout nests efficiently on the sheet, which usually means better board yield and lower material cost per unit. It is the most common tuck-end style for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and general retail cartons.
On an STE carton, both closures hinge from the same panel, usually the back, so the tucks close in the same direction and the front panel stays uninterrupted at both ends. That gives a cleaner look when the carton is opened or displayed. STE layouts typically nest less efficiently, so they can use more board per unit.
Choosing
- Board yield: RTE usually nests tighter on the sheet, which lowers material cost.
- Presentation: STE keeps the front panel clean at both ends and suits premium products.
- Artwork: on RTE, the two tuck flaps fold in opposite directions, so graphics on each flap must be oriented accordingly.
- Conversion: both are glued at a single side seam on a straight-line folder-gluer.
- Load and closure: if the product is heavy or will ship loose, consider slit locks or a snap-lock or auto-bottom, since a tuck bottom alone can open under load.
Tuck-end cartons rely on precise tuck dimensions and friction or slit locks to stay closed. Dust flaps, tuck clearances and panel sizes all need to account for caliper, and grain should run so the tucks hold their shape. Work from a dieline engineered for your board, and check artwork orientation on every panel and flap before release. A printed mockup folded by hand catches upside-down copy faster than any screen proof.
